LSAT RULES –
LSAT TEST CENTER RULES
LSAC takes their standardized test taking environment very seriously. So, the have developed some stringent and enforced LSAT Test Center Rules. The testing supervisors do monitor the classroom and do enforce these regulations. They will issue misconduct notices and report any violations of procedure to LSAC. LSAC Test Administration Group will then send the LSAT taker an “Irregularity Report” indicating that the tester violated testing regulations. Depending on the severity of the misconduct, scores can be canceled or delayed until the matter is resolved. Here is an example of one violation: “during the collection of the test booklets the test taker took out a water/juice bottle and drank from it.” This particular incident was happily resolved, but what a major level of anxiety must have resulted for that poor sap!! Know the rules. Also know that the rules do change regularly, so you need to review LSAC publications for the most up to date changes.
What you must bring to the LSAT test center:
- Admission Ticket –
There could be changes to the testing location information. Print this out the night before the test to make sure that nothing has changed - Identification –
Government Issued (but not a government employee id). LSAC says:
The ID, “MUST contain a recent and recognizable photo, your first and last name, and your date of birth.” (So, practice that goofy face you made when your driver’s license photo was taken.)
Some common, acceptable forms of ID: Passport Book, Passport Card, Driver’s License, State or Province-issued ID, US military ID, Green Card, Canadian Permanent Resident Card - Pencils –
Pencils with good erasers (HB or #2)
No mechanical pencils, no ink pens
Items Allowed in the Test Room
(LSAC took some pointers from TSA. You will need a clear plastic Ziplock bag, max. size–1 gallon)
This bag must be stored under your chair and may be accessed only during break.
- ID
- wallet
- keys
- analog wristwatch (see LSAT Watch – Timers)
- medical or hygiene products
- pencils
- highlighter
- erasers
- pencil sharpener
- tissues
- beverage in plastic container or juice box (20 oz./591 ml max size) No aluminum cans
- snack for break
All items must fit into the sealed bag.
Items Allowed on the Desktop
- Tissues — for all the tears test takers shed?
- ID
- pencils
- erasers
- pencil sharpener
- highlighter
- wristwatch
- No electronic devices are permitted.
No timers are permitted… only analog wristwatches. (see LSAT Watch – Timers)
Items Prohibited at the Test Center
Don’t bring anything more than what LSAC has already said you can bring – “No digital watches, alarm watches, beeping watches, calculator watches, cell phones, pay phones (??) beepers, pagers, cameras, recorders, earplugs… ”
LSAC states that anyone discovered in possession or using any electronic device will be dismissed from the test and their score cancelled. This includes during break time.
No hats or hoods of any kind unless they are religious apparel — so leave your cowboy hat or baseball cap home – unless you have pre-approval from LSAC so you proved that you are religiously western or that baseball is your god.
Some things are just too obvious, but LSAC lists it so I will say, “Don’t pack heat — You may not bring your handgun to the testing center.” Oh, I bet you are just itching to test the limits of your 2nd Ammendment rights.
LSAC Test Day Rules
Unless you have received approval from LSAC for special LSAT Accommodations, you may only access your food and/or drink during breaks. (Ex. of special accommodations: diabetes, medication induced thirst, etc. See LSAT Accommodations)
If you are prone to excessive sighs or mutters of disbelief, practice keeping them to yourself. LSAC says:
“Disruptive behavior in any form will not be tolerated. The test supervisor has sole discretion in determining what constitutes disruptive behavior. The test supervisor is authorized to dismiss from the test center any test taker who creates a disturbance.”
From time to time, LSAC will update their rules and regulations.
