Should I Request LSAT Accommodations?

Should I Request LSAT Accommodations?

Following is a brief list of things you may want to consider when deciding whether or not to request LSAT accommodations from LSAC. Keep in mind that the LSAT accommodations you request may only be partially granted or not granted at all. The question requires thorough and thoughtful consideration and if you decide to pursue the request, that requires significant work and documentation. See LSAT Accommodations.

  • Can I achieve my goal without requesting special accommodations? For some, it is impossible, and the answer will be an obvious and resounding “No!”
  • Is the effort and time required to apply for and document my need worth the time involved, based on an uncertain outcome? The ADA act gives persons with disabilities this right. But, vindicating that right will take valuable time and might only be partially successful.
  • Can I study harder, under simulated LSAT conditions, to acclimate myself to LSAT test taking conditions?
Perhaps, if you have attention issues, studying in a busy coffee shop or restaurant would be a way to overcome. I’ve read some impressive diaries of individuals who realistically set their goals, set their mind to that goal, and persevered. Inspirational…and possible content for your personal statement?
  • Note:
**  If you want to take the test a second time after taking the LSAT without accommodations and receive a score of 150 or above it may inhibit your ability to acquire an accommodation. LSAC may reason that your above average score on the first exam disqualifies you for accommodations.
** Taking the LSAT without accommodations  may undermine your ability to receive accommodations on the bar exam.
  • Do I want the little * by my name that says my score has not been included in the averaged national scores? It is unknown how each law school considers this for admissions.
  • Can my personal statement, included with my admissions submission, point to my LSAT score as a success, even though I have a documented disability? Remember that your LSAT score, important as it is, is one part of the admissions process. Letters of recommendation, GPA, Personal Statement, all can help overcome a less than hoped for score.
