Read this before using the sample LSAT exams listed below

A note of caution before you take any LSAT sample exams or questions that you find on the web. First of all, the quality of the tests you will find varies: from the real deal from LSAC itself, to really poorly written test questions that don’t do more than remotely resembling a real LSAT question. We have reviewed a number of available tests and questions, and usually the first ones to show up in a search are actually the worst. (If you want to go straight to the list we have compiled, you can find it at the bottom of this post.)

And, no matter what you do, don’t rely on the sample LSATs you find online to give you a realistic idea of how well you will score on a real LSAT. These sample LSATs, even the well-writeen ones, are not statistically normed to reflect the full distribution of scores from 120 to 180 among a large population of students.

The best way to use sample LSAT exams and questions you find online.

The best approach is to use the LSAT sample exams you find online as a quick and dirty introduction to the basic type of questions on the test, as well as to get an idea of the basic formatting of the questions.
For your real LSAT preparation, you will want to use authentic LSATs. These are real LSAT tests that were used in past years, so you know you can rely on them to be realistic and for the score charts to accurately reflect what you would have gotten on that test.

There are two ways you can get your hands on authentic LSATs.

If you take a class from a commercial LSAT prep course you will get questions provided as part of your tuition. Every commercial LSAT prep course I am aware of uses authentic LSATs, so you don’t need to worry that you aren’t getting real LSATs. If you are not sure if you are getting real LSATs as part of your class, look for trademark or licensing info that indicates that the test questions are being used under license of LSAC. If a class doesn’t use real LSAT questions for most or all of the instruction, then you need to start asking questions. A real benefit of taking a commercial course is that they will normally provide you with detailed answers and explanations to those real questions, which is a huge benefit when you are analyzing your practice tests.

If you are doing self-prep, getting real LSATs is as easy as ordering them from Amazon or LSAC itself. The most popular sample LSAT exams books are the “10 Prep” series. Basically, every 3-4 years LSAC compiles the previous 10 tests into one convenient book. The “10 Prep” series has been the most popular LSAT prep book since it was first published in the mid-1990s. One thing you need to be careful of is that the “10 Prep” series have confusingly similar names. Take special care that you are purchasing the most recent editions.

Note that although we eliminated any completely unrealistic sample questions, the quality of these still varies widely and these tend to be ‘watered-down’ versions, so again, use these only for a very cursory introduction to the test:

A warning about other sample questions you find online. Unless a website is clearly owned by a test prep firm, you should not bother using the questions. Some of the top search results are filled with sites that offer all sorts of ‘free’ material that isn’t even worth clicking.
